220 GSM vs 180 GSM T-Shirts — What the Number Actually Means

If you’ve been buying t-shirts in India for a while, you’ve probably seen “GSM” listed in product specs — usually 180, 200, or 220. Most brands don’t explain what it means. Here’s the full breakdown, and why it matters more than you think.

What Does GSM Mean?

GSM stands for grams per square metre — it’s a measurement of fabric weight. The higher the GSM, the denser and heavier the fabric. For t-shirts, this directly affects durability, print longevity, shrinkage resistance, and how the tee drapes on your body.

180 GSM T-Shirts

Most mass-market Indian brands — Bewakoof, H&M basics, fast fashion imports — use 160–180 GSM cotton. At this weight, the fabric is light and cheap to produce. The tradeoffs: it stretches out of shape after a few washes, graphic prints crack and peel faster, and the fabric can go translucent when wet or stretched. Fine for one season. Not fine for two.

220 GSM T-Shirts

220 GSM is the sweet spot for premium graphic tees — heavy enough to hold shape across dozens of washes, light enough to wear in Indian summer without overheating. At this weight, screen prints and DTG graphics stay crisp longer, the tee holds its size and silhouette, and the fabric doesn’t go see-through when it gets wet or stretched across the chest.

Pi Clothings uses a 220 GSM cotton-elastane blend across its entire lineup — the elastane adds 4-way stretch so the tee moves with you rather than pulling at the seams.

The Elastane Factor

Pure cotton at 220 GSM is durable but stiff — it doesn’t have much give. Adding elastane (typically 3–5%) to a 220 GSM cotton base gives you the weight and durability of heavy cotton with the stretch and recovery of a performance fabric. This is especially important for slim fit cuts — without elastane, a heavy slim fit tee will pull across the chest and shoulders with every movement.

GSM and Indian Conditions

Indian summers are brutal — UV index 8–11, humidity up to 90% in coastal and monsoon regions, and repeated machine washing. 180 GSM fabric weakens faster under these conditions. 220 GSM holds up. If you’re buying a tee you plan to wear more than one season, the extra weight pays for itself.

What Pi Clothings Uses

Every Pi Clothings t-shirt and sleeveless tee is made from 220 GSM cotton-elastane blend. Zero shrink, zero fade — both are design requirements, not just marketing. The slim fit cuts are made possible by the elastane content, which gives the tee enough stretch to fit properly without pulling.

Slim fit T-shirts start at ₹999. Sleeveless at ₹1,499. Free pan India shipping on all orders.

If the brand you’re buying from doesn’t list GSM, assume it’s on the lower end. Transparency about fabric weight is a basic quality signal — brands that care about their product tell you what’s in it.
